I'm eating in a place in Savannah, Georgia where the kitchen is on the first floor and the walk-in cooler is on the second.
Any suggestions on where to eat (we are *not* going to Paula Deen's)?
I had a really good meal at Mrs. Wilkes House once. Nothing fancy, but its great southern cooking.

They're only open for lunch, Monday through Friday.

Marrakesh was good a year ago.

We didn't make it to Mrs. Wilkes house early enough, so we defaulted to Paula Deen's for a late lunch. It was buttery. I liked it, but you know, ain't no big thang.
The best crabcakes are at the Crabshack. It's right off of the causeway to Tybee Island, maybe a 15-20 minute drive? WORTH IT. Very kitchsy place, but great scenery on the porch overlooking the water and delicious food.
I had a nice casual dinner at Marrakesh, too, and liked it. It is across the street from the Tea House, which is pricey but has a good reputation. I hear this from my haunted savannah tour guide, who waits tables there.
We also liked the candy store in whatever that cutesy old neighborhood is downtown. Yum, candy.

Long ago I had a fantastic dinner near the Savannah College of Art and Design. The restaurant (or at least the chef) is likely gone, but I imagine it would still be nice to eat in that part of town -- I suspect that SCAD draws good eaters, and then you can see how SCAD spent its millions buying, renovating and repurposing grand old buildings.

Phil: SCAD is scattered through quite a bit of Savannah. Some of SCAD's eateries (also distributed amongst Savannah's buildings) that used to be available to the general population no longer are. I don't know if they got too popular, or just needed to be restricted to the students they were meant to serve. Just hoofing it to "the cafeteria" doesn't cut it when your college is scattered over most of Savannah (PDF). :)
