I thought this was so nice looking that I took a picture (click to embiggen):
In case you're interested, look down the menu to the #12.
So how does their pizza compare with others in the area? Also, do you know where I can find a cheap alternative to a baking stone (for cooking pizza)? I tried HD and Lowes and neither sell what I've been told should be unglazed quarry tile..

I'd rate Pop's slightly ahead of Rockwood. Panzanella's pizzas are also quite good, IIRC, but that's not their main focus so the variety is limited. Brixx has more variety but I find their crust uninspiring. I can't think of anyone else local doing that style of pizza altho I'm sure there are.

burgeoningfoodie - I'd concur with Georg on Pop's being the best ATM. Unfortunately, neither Pop's Backdoor nor Rockwood Filling Station (they've finally got a WWW site -- woo-hoo!) was around when I did the pizza poll, or we could just let the people speak. Hmmm... maybe it's time for another pizza poll....
Unfortunately I can't find the suggestion I've heard for what type of tile to buy to use instead of a baking stone. If I remember or find that, I'll post it.

Cool and thank you. Being in Chapel Hill the pizza offerings are slim and somewhat generic. A lot of people like Pepper's but I've never been. I've also heard good things about Italian Pizzeria 3.

Great Post never saw pizza with shrimp, I do believe I could learn to like that
I've had pizza from Pepper's in Chapel Hill a while back and it was very good, had a mountain of stufff on it...

Joe, this is something I thought you must have invented:

I know that pizza has become "crust with whatever the hell you can think of to throw on it", but Pop's style pizza bugs the hell out of me. Sauce. Cheese. Maybe some pepperoni or bell peppers. That's it, dammit.

Fritz - It's prolly not for everyone, but I like it. Besides, it's got bacon on it. :)
Kira - Which one? All of them? :) The one that comes up first for me is a picture of Martha Stewart with a link to a chocolate cupcake recipe.
Maura - They do make a pizza Margherita: it's #5, and also on the regular dinner menu. OTOH, since pizza Margherita is now a protected name, I guess no one can make it unless you live in the right part of Italy. :)

I've had the Margherita several times. It's excellent, right out of the oven or the next day. Great for breakfast.
If you like gourmet pizza, you'll most likely love Pop's. And at least they got rid of the duck.

Duck? WTF?!? Did they have a duck confit pizza and I missed it? Cos that sounds awesome.
Posted by: georg | 17 February 2009 at 08:53 AM
georg, I don't know if it was duck confit, but they used to have a pizza with duck. I made the unfortunate mistake of having a taste. Obviously, I hate duck.

hell Pop's plain ole cheese pizza is badass! and about as cheap as a discount chain! (18" for $12?)

TSQ75 - I should let myself have one of the plain cheese ones sometime, but I always thing I want more. :)
