My friend Maura, an adopted Durhamite, is going to be guest posting on Accidental Hedonist. Check her out starting this Thursday (3 July 2008).
While I'm here: The burger poll is up to 91 votes. That's pretty cool. Tell your friends to come vote for their favorite burger place. At the moment, the Fed is in the lead, which is kind of surprising to me, given the low amount of buzz for them during the primary. Dain's Place is a close second, and Wimpy's is an even closer third, if you follow me. Next come Bull McCabe's and Cook Out in a tie for 4th. Then "other" is polling at almost 10%, with everyplace else underneath in single digits.
We have someone voting for the Fed from Israel. Wonder who that could be?
I've been a fan of Dain's Place -- and Dain himself, for that matter -- since their opening week, but it is awfully hard to compete with Fed-burgers. Why? They grind their own meet so you can actually get a medium-rare or (gasp!) rare burger. MMMMMOOOOO they're good.

I think I've been told Dain's grinds their own meat, but I don't know for sure.
The next time you want something rare somewhere, tell them you want it cooked "as little as possible." Usually works for me, as long as I don't mind getting bleu steaks and sushi. :)
I was on New Orleans once -- can't remember the name of the place, but I'll solicit help on that -- and they said they wouldn't cook the woman's burger rare because of some governmental regulation. She was really pleased at hearing the "as little as possible" line, and said she'd steal it in the future. I felt like Jay Leno with "Crunch all you want, we'll make more." :)
