I find it hard to believe this is much of a trend, but an article from Food & Wine claims that vegetarians are eating more meat.
BTW, in a rare [Get it? RARE. Oh, I slay myself....] commercial plug, I have a friend who hand-raises cattle on a farm between here and Wake Forest. You can buy anything from individual cuts to a whole steer through an associated abattoir. Let me know if you'd like details. The cattle are raised on a pasture, and fed things like brewery leftovers (which they apparently love).
Edit: Speaking of "Word & Word," it appears someone is finally taking over the previous home of McDonald's Drug Store on Ninth Street. I don't imagine there are many people in Durham who never made it in there; if you didn't, you missed one of the few places around that hand-made real milkshakes. (I'm glad I got a t-shirt before they closed.) A sign says the new business is to be called "Ox & Rabbit," and claims they will have "sodas and sundries." I hope they kept the old soda counter, and keep making milkshakes. One of those milkshakes from McDonald's Drug Store was a treat, and a meal in itself.
McDonalds's also did hand-mixed sodas. I was particularly fond of the chocolate Coke, which tasted exactly like a Tootsie Roll.

"Abattoir" is such a lovely-sounding word . . . if you don't know French.

This post got a mention in the N&O's Bull's Eye Blog today. Congratulations Joe, you're a news source!

This post? Gack. Maybe they picked it because of its lack of content. :)
Minty: Everything sounds better in French, especially if you don't speak it. Right? :)

Didn't i read a few months ago that the soda fountain was removed and is in storage somewhere waiting for a new home? Preservation Durham maybe was involved in it, but there's nothing on their website.
John Schelp will know.
