Something's Fishy is my SF reading group. We typically meet about once a month -- the last Wednesday of the month at 7 pm at Fishmonger's. The next meeting dates should be:
- 31 October 2007 (we're going to need to move this, I imagine -- scary)
- 28 November 2007 (suspect: 6 days after T'Day)
- 26 December 2007 (Oooh -- Boxing Day! Maybe not.)
We are now reaping the harvest sown when we moved the meeting to the end of the month. So, dates may change. Please check this page (or the mailing list) for changes.
Current members are
- Paula Childers
- Leslie Hobbs
- Barry Ragin
- Lucy Ringland
- David Skaar
- Joe Vilas
The person who chose the work being discussed will facilitate the meeting.
We're scheduled to discuss (facilitator listed afterward in parentheses):
- Doomsday Book by Connie Willis (Leslie Hobbs)
-- order extremely indefinite after this point --
- Think Like a Dinosaur by James Patrick Kelly (Barry Ragin)
- Sister Alice by Robert Reed (David Skaar)
- Life During Wartime by Lucius Shepard (Joe Vilas, assuming I can find enough copies)
- Juniper TIme by Kate Wilhelm (Paula Childers)
- Hogfather by Terry Pratchett (Leslie Hobbs)
- Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan (Joe Vilas)
We rotate discussion choices through the list of members in alphabetical order by last name. My idea of SF is pretty liberal; we've read quite a bit of fantasy and other speculative fiction as well as science fiction. The book needs to stand on its own, and not be the first (or worse) ins some series. The top book on the list above is the one we're scheduled to discuss at the next meeting.
Please give me your book choices at least two meetings or more before we'd discuss it, or we'll roll over to the next work that's already chosen. Pretty please? I promise, it doesn't hurt. This way we all can have time to get and read the book. No one ever died from picking the wrong book, or even a bad one -- the bad ones have generated some of our best discussions. :) Ok? We can discuss your choice if you want, but if you pick something in-print and (at least arguably) fantasy or science fiction, it will probably work fine. If you have questions, just ask someone.
If you pick an out-of-print book, please find copies for folks. I'll be happy to arrange for bulk purchases of in-print books, as long as no one stiffs me. So far, people typically get their own copies.
If you like, please look at our previously
discussed works.
There is a group mailing list for discussion and announcements about group functions.
If you're interested, or have any questions, please e-mail me (Joe Vilas) at jhvilas@gmail.com.
