Even if it's unfair and they're our allies, it's kind of refreshing to hear a nation other than the U.S. be called "evil."  Iran also put some sort of Evil Eye curse on Hillary and caused her to break her elbow.  Maybe we'll have WWII all over again, where Britain is responsible for the Middle East and we're charged with, um, handling the Pacific.  Europe will be up for grabs this time.  Maybe the Scandinavians will take it and invade Russia up to the Urals, since they can handle the cold.  Denmark and Finland can attack Poland from opposite sides and partition it.  Or maybe not. 

Daylight savings time does not save energy

An article in the WSJ about an interesting DST study in Indiana:

I think there was another study I heard about when we went through the last round of DST changes that also confirmed we don't save energy with it.  Anyway, my opinion is that noon is when the sun is highest in the sky.  Let's leave it as close as we can to that, ok?

BTW, the change is tomorrow.  Set your clocks forward an hour tonight, lose an hour of sleep, and increase your likelihood of getting in a car accident tomorrow (yes, really).  :(

Another Guy Fawkes Day Shot to Hell

In all the wackiness of the past few days, I totally forgot today was Guy Fawkes Day.  Damn. 

Wouldn't your mama be proud of you

I once heard a story about Dolly Parton:  Someone commented publicly to her on her breast size, to which she answered "Wouldn't your mama be proud of you!"   

I wonder what the mothers of the folks who did this would say:

Are they voting?  Are their moms?  How many of them have the means to carry out an assassination? I'm glad McCain changed his mind, because you never know what kind of nutjobs are out there, or where they're going to come from. Even the, um, most famous governor of Minnesota ever agrees with me. 

What will it take to raise the level of discourse in this country, and get the kind of "higher quality outrage" we need?

I'm sure a lot of us can relate to this:

After 45 minutes the seal gave up, swam into the water and then completely ignored the bird it had just assaulted, the scientists report.

so I'm wondering:

• why one community isn't up in arms, trying to prove the penguin was female
• why another community isn't up in arms, trying to prove the penguin was male
• why a couple more communities aren't trying to find the penguin and comfort it
• why yet more communities aren't trying to kill the sea lion, or at least put it in jail

I'm sure I'll have more smartass remarks to add later, after everyone I've insulted starts complaining.  OTOH, that didn't happen last time. 

After the cameras were off, I wonder if either of them had a cigarette?
