Compare Foods has opened a new supermarket in Avondale Plaza at the site of the old Winn-Dixie. It's about time folks in that part of Durham had a supermarket (as much as I liked going in King's, it was kinda small). The new grocery store seems thrift- and Latino-oriented, with lots of specialty meat items like fresh pork belly, bull fries, and goat. [An irrelevant aside: I'm always amused to see testicles in 3-packs. It really seems like they should come as some multiple of 2. Yes, I know you can get chicken parts and god knows what else in non-animalian quantities, but I'm still amused. So there. :) ] No veal the day I was there, but given the orientation toward value, that makes sense. They even have the large size of my favorite juice product: Kern's Apricot Nectar (the Harris Teeter and Kroger stopped carrying it except in little single-serving cans).
The store was absolutely packed during my visit. I've never seen the parking lot in that mall so full, even when all the stores were open. They were running out of carts, and the checkout lines would be up to 10 carts long, back down the aisles. So shop early and often. Open 7:30 am to 10 pm, 7 days a week.
